Thanks for the photos...and looking forward to seeing some others Brian. Your unknown neo looks similar to Annick. Many neos came out of the cross of carolinae x Fireball that are variegated, & have some of that reddish flush. These are a group of Annick, unfortunately they got a little burnt wh...

Another option is Aechmea lueddemanniana...as the foliage colour fits.

What neo's do you grow Brian? I bet they would like your tropical conditions
Do you have any photos?

Most of my collection is made up of neo's...but I have been growing a few Dyckia over the last couple of years, and must say I'm coming to like the spiny ones :thumbl

Hi Brian,

I'm not an expert on Hechtia...but it does look like H. glomerata to me.

What other bromeliads are you growing in Taiwan?

Cheers, Andrew.

Alcantarea identified

I know this is an old topic (almost 12 months) but I thought it would be of interest to know that this Alcantarea has now been named and registered. It has been called Alcantarea 'Raymond Golden Brown'. The Alcantarea was named and registered by Peter Franklin of Australia. He does comment that the ...

Neo 'Devroe'

Hi, I have grown a few plants very similar to Neo 'Devroe'. As the flowers die they slowly rot, if the centre is not flushed out, a foul smell can develop. However, this process is quite normal. The plant is still very likely to produce a number of pups for you. I would remove the old dead flower he...

Alcantarea

I have been in contact with a collector of Alcantarea who is based in Brisbane. He has indicated that this plant is an unidentified species of Alcantarea, however, it is found growing naturally on Mt Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro City. It has been called sp 'Corcovado'. The plant is often confused wit...

Vriesea Seed

Hi, Yes, I am interested in the gigantea's .....do you know hat it was hybridised with....??? also very interested in the Alcantarea, but would like to know what type it is, as it is a long term investment, and I would like to know that it is a species I do not currently have. I also have a gigantea...

Vriesea seed

Hi, I have been growing a few Brom's from seed. Mainly my own Neo hybrids, but also a few Alcantarea species. Have grown a couple of Vriesea types, but in limited numbers. Have had a few seedlings yellow off and waste away, plus a few Alcantarea seedlings that just browned off and gradually died. Th...

Hi Timm, This is a bit of trial and error for me. The Alcantarea glaziouana grass pups already removed seem to be doing OK. And I'll be removing a few more in a week or so. The Alcantarea imperialis rubra have already show some growth, but they were over 10cm when removed. It is our spring here, so ...

Hi Justin, I keep a number of Neo's outside, including some of Grant Groves hybrids, although do not have 'Grace' in my collection. Have had a few Neo's develop rot in the centre of the cup. For me, this is typically early spring, or late autumn. When the central leaves turn black at their base, can...

Alcantarea glaziouana

A common way of propagating Alcantarea is by grass pups. Many Alcantarea will produce grass pups around the base during the early stages of their growth. During June this year, I purchased a young Alcantarea glaziouana from a local nursery. Plant was in a group of six, and was selected because it ha...

Alcantarea nahoumii

During November 2003 a member of our local Bromeliad Society brought in a flower spike of Alcantarea nahoumii full of seed. I obtained one carpel, and germinated about 140 seeds, being approx a third of the total. Seedlings were in a pumice sand and pine bark mix. They grew rapidly for the first 6 m...

Vriesea hieroglyphica photo

Here is a photo showing the seedlings, and grass pups. Over the last 5 months 13 grass pups have been removed from the original seedlings. Some seedlings had as many as 3 grass pups. 12 grass pups are doing well, and 10 of these are potted in a palm peat / perlite mix at 50/50. Original seedlings ar...

Palm Peat

Looks about the same. Ours is not so fine, seems a little more coarse and fibrose. I have never had a problem with aglae. Although do have a small moss that gets into small pots in the plastic house. I think the algae must be introduced somehow, as it is not naturally in the peat. Maybe comes in wit...
