Well I did go back to the vendor who said it was Aechmea Tonada. I went to the bromeliad ID page and I found Tonada - the leaves look similar but the flower is completely different. I hope it will flower again soon and if it does I post a good quality close-up. until then - thanks for your help!

this is the best shot I have. The flower is gone by now. The plant is from a local nursery called at www.exoticgardens.biz. The leaves are about 30 -40 cm long and max 3 cm wide.
