Hello Gerhard, So did I, I was confused about the great variation of this species too.
But I've realized that they should be identical and would be mentioned as
a 'Form' or a specific cultivar clone.
The variation will be so conspicuous when the plant came from seeds.
Most of Dyckia marnier-lapostollei in my collection came from a well known
German seed dealer, Kohres Kateen, longtime ago.
I had posted about these in a thread below :

http://www.bromeliads.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=950

Also, the growth condition could make two plant different.
Some of my friend talked about this topic in another forum, please take a look:

Dear Gerfi maybe you are luckier than you think...

Hi, Gerfi. about your possible two Dyckias marnier lapostollei. The first picture shows marnier plant, at least by the appearence or by the look. We can not afirm the same in genetics. But it has a huge possibility of being a true Dyckia marnier laostollei. The second picture, in spite of being very riscky to afirm by the photo, you hae a Dyckia lindelvaldae. There´s a very easy test to differenciate one from the other. The lindelvaldae´s rossete are very flat when in good condition and it preserves this tendency of producing flat rosettes. The marnier tend to produce taller rosettes. Hope I am rigth ´cause a Dyckia lindelvaldae is much more rare than a marnier. The Dyckia lindelvaldae flower bear another curiosity: it is scented and lovely scented. The perfume in Dyckia blooms are very rare and weird. Just another one species and still to be named from Mato Grosso is scented but this one is not as lovely as the lindelvaldae scent. Hope I haven´t written to much...
Cheers and prosit from Brazil
