Even here in Brazil Dyckias are hard to get and keep.

Anything that doesn't fit in the other forums ;-)
also for NON-bromeliad topics.

Dyckias in Brazil are not in the next corner or are sold everywhere. No way! It is extremely hard to find any to buy. No one cultivates them to sell or for selling purposes. In fact it is forbbiden by the Brazilian Law. Once in a while and very once in a while one Dyckia may be found in a shop but people here is not fond of them and they are not hot coockies and hardly sell so even the florists are relutant to keep them. I never saw any dyckia on selling anywhere in Brazil being well identified. When you find one it may be classified as succulent or cactus. We search, we Dyckia lovers search in Nature, trade with scientists and researches and mainly we trade and change plants and seeds with friends all over the country and neighbour countries. I do travel a lot and Brazil is huge. We have some well known collectors and curious people among Dyckia lovers, of course some love more the money Dyckias can bring into their pockets than the Dyckias themselves but even so they may come in handy help one way or another. No , no and no and no several more no or noes more: unles you have friends that are Dyckia lovers your Dyckia collection will be a migger and miserable one. You also oughtta be an intrepid searcher to get new ones to trate with them and if you are atletic, the better ´cause there are mountanis to climb, rivers to cross...and many, many no no ahead.
Dyckias are not in nature as they would be in a shop. Sometimes a very rare one is in such a miserable state that you think twice before taking it home with you. Sometimes the perfect Dyckia is so high in a clif that it is easier to climb the Everest. If you are an alpinist the better but carrying the alpinism gear, hooks and ropes in the fields may be to much too desgasting and exaustive for you. No, no and no. In Europe, Japan, USA, and some parts of Asia one can buy Dyckias by mail, without stepping out the house.
There are catalogs in the Net, buy Dyckias alive by catalogs. Some american seller send them all over the world. It is all a matter of money! Here its forbiden to put Dyckias out the country! It is forbiden to get into the country from abroad. If you are caught with one you go to jail! It is even forbbiden to keep with you any of the native plants without a special legal permit.
Dyckias here and keep dyckias here is far more difficult than anywhere else on Earth. This country we say here " is not mother Joana´s house any longer" where everything was possible. No, no.
It is not the plants themselves that is difficult to find available next corner, the information about how to keep and care is even more scarse and rare. Yes, yes there is no, no and no books on Dyckias in Portuguese even those rare ones whose author is Brazilian it is published outside this country in languages we poor mortal guys will never have a chance even to hear it to get to know the sound of the words. ( ..and I manage to understand German, English, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese)
No, no and multiple noes! Here it is very difficult to keep Dyckias!
But things are improving some how. We are not anymore so easy to fool. The informatinon is far more easy with interNet and everybody who knows a bit English as myself can go farer than ever. The world, our house, is getting smaller and smaller and things will get better, easier and a bit more fare.
I wrote this ´cause people there keep on saying to meoh how easy is to have dyckias there, the climate...and so on...
No, no once more even here without knowledge and some skills you do not go anywhere with Dyckias.
See this picture. This may be the most new desired Dyckia plant among brazilian Dyckia keepers. Big teeth and red, red as blood and ever ever red as pigeon blood! A friend was the one to get to it in wilderness. This friend really loves me and we are as close as any good friends could be. I live in the Ssouthern part and this friend of mine lives up up North. Look at he plant (and this was long after it came to me) The plant has improved a lot!

This is the recently described Dyckia grandidentata

Beitrag von Constantino Gastaldi »

Yes this is Dyckia grandidentata (big toothed Dyckia). I have seem Dyckia with much bigger teeth so why grandidentata? Some non described really big toothed ones must be gigantodentata? I think these teeth are not big enough to be grandidentata but.....what goes on in ones mind...... Yes, this is a nice plant and bears conscpicuous spines as for being big toothed .....
Science is so. Maybe one day the name Dyckia finally turns into the proper and correct name GRAVATA. Yes, Dyckias had names and were known here long before Columbus had been born. Gravata is a name known in all South American countries that is home for a Dyckia. Gravatá means a plant full of spines resembling the pine apple plant. Science prefered to honor a German prince and Gernamy had so many they exported them to everywhere. Their main clients were Russia and England but they were exported to farer regions. They maybe were boring guys or so plenty Germany wanted to get rid of them. Maybe.....just maybe.

This is nice and rare one!!
I red the very good article of PJ Braun and Eddie E Pereira about the 2 new heavily-armed species from west-central Brazil: Dyckia richardii (Serra da Bemvinda) and grandidenta (discovered in 1988, between Aquidauana and Coxim)... Even if it has been in hand (D richardii) for more than a quarter century!!! Unbelievable...

Bonjour, comment êtes-vous garçon?

Liberté, égalité, fraternité: toujours!

Do not get so admired. At that time Cerrad Dyckia were for nothing, were nothing to wotha a second look at. Bush men wandered that region looking for cacti and orchids. Some German and also some Brazilian bushmen.

Dyckias are yet not known! We just lifted the penumbra of the unknown.

They were not described before for one simple goog reason: there was
something better to do, to discribe and so on, something more interesting.

We just found a new monkey! Imagine a brand new antropomorphic species. A never saw one! A Dyckia? A sand grain.......
Brazil is a treasured land.

Look at DykiaBrazil Blog. http://dyckiabrazil.blogspot.com/
Read the post concerning to the Fan Dyckia.
Do not faint back!

Thank you.You are king and gentle just this. I know you are there.
The blog is a document where I show what is in my garden. Later I want to show nature or plants in nature.
All this is part of a major project. A book: The Alluring Dyckias. Guess it would be usefull to all Dyckia lovers.
In the blog I try to say a bit of Brazil, climate and hints of our history. I entice those who study Dyckias to show us more and better of all their findings.
I try to humanize the plants to make them more understandable and better comprehended.
Language is still a barrier to me.
The blog shows plants never shown before anywhere.
Thanks for your kind words.
Vive la France!
Cheers to all of us!

Bonjour Constantino,

you're doing a great job !!! And I was going to enquire you about a book... so it's on and this is a very very good news!!!
You have such a wonderful "collection" and knowledge of plants that noone have or can show. On your useful blogspot, the pictures + names + your own comments + cultivation tips + local datas + phytogeographic informations make a real force in explaining and understanding this Genus left alone by researchers and biologists and botanists for such a long time. And so on with Hechtia and Puya... Making a book with you garden plants and plants in habitat will be so great!!!
muito obrigado
Vivie Brasil
If I can be in any help (very very humble) just contact me...

I was wondering about the reproduction of Dyckia: are they self-polinated, or not?
Thank you

Yes! They are! ..but some are not!

Beitrag von Constantino Gastaldi »

The vast majority of Dyckias species is self fertile. They may produce fruits and fertile seeds using their own pollen. We also say they are auto-compatible plants. Also these very same plants adore strange Dyckia pollen. They love to love strangers! they are self fertile and auto-compatible and also fair easy going.....

Some Dyckias, meanwhile, are not self fertile. They do not recognize their own pollen. These are the Self unfertile Dyckias or auto-incompatible ones. They normally or usually, are Dyckias from the Brazilian Cerrado Region ( Central Brazil Area). They come from an arid area. Some of the most desired ones are self infertile or auto incompatible. You need two plants from the same species to get fertile true species seeds.

Some Dyckias are half self fertile and half self unfertile. This means you will get fertile seeds with just one plant but in a short time if you continue to fertilize these plants you will run out of the road and you will come empty handed or a sterile descendent plant.

Some plants as the fan Dyckia are not fertile. The plant is a gene variation, a deviation and can not prosduce its own seeds. The fan Dyckias are produced by a normal spiral form. Some of its seeds produce spiral normal plants and some the fan like form. This fan like form was described as species but the species is the spiral one this is a CHIMERA.

Bushmen on tropics used to send plants to Taxonomists Doctors in Europe and never would say everything for many reasons. Language for instance.
Imagine a Brazilian bushman trying to explain to a European taxonomist all the details concerning to a new species. Description of the place, the flowers and many details as for instance scent of the flowers ( Yes, this may be very important specially with Dyckias). How, for instance, you would describe in all details the habitat of a Bavarian Stela Alpina to a Chinese taxonomist in your own language?
The existence of this spiral form is now coming out of the penumbra and many thing is now getting into light, a place they should have ever been.
LIGHT, LIGHT, LIGHT....

Translators? Humm the person should understand well both language and also botanics...quite rare, isn´t?

This plant the fan one comes from an area that even the Devil wouldn´t dare to go some thirty years ago. Now you may find this guy there!

Information........valuable trustful information. This maybe rarer than any rare plant.

Today and with Dyckias taxonomists are a bit more precautionful.
- It is wise to visit the plant in the habitat.
- Visit it in summer, in winter, when blooming, after blooming
It is wise to know of the people all around. Take notes on temperature, and many other things.
Taxonomist must be ewxpert in gardenring!
- Be a good gardner before being a taxonimist!
Is everything possible? Yes! But this time is getting over it is better say: everything was possible.
We can not trust in a Science that does not observe!
Observation is prior a true sine quan non condition to Science!
Science is Light! Can´t hide! Knowledge is Light just when spreaded....
The description slhoud be published, they have to. But publishing in papers just the scientists will see... And the gardeners? Plants will relu on them to survive.
Dyckias are intriguing material and science has just opened their Pandora´s box.
Ah...The answer for your quenstion is Yes and also no.
THERE BE LIGHT!
This is the main role of Science: LIGHT, LIGHT, LIGTH.
SCIENCE CAN NOT LEAD US TO THE PENUMBRA...
MUST GUIDE US TO LIGHT!
OUGHT TO TAKE US FROM THE SHADOWS.
CANCER, HUNGER ARE IN THY HANDS.............BE LIGHT!
