Endangerment of Dyckia distachya

Beitrag von Timm Stolten »

Hi folks and especially Constantino !

GerFi wrote me a while ago, he encountered news in the internet,
about a huge hydroelectric power plant near Barra-Grande, where
the only known location of Dyckia distachya is supposed to be.
He found several pages unfortunately (for us) all in portuguese
- http://www.apremavi.org.br/noticias/apr ... rra-grande
- http://www.apremavi.org.br/noticias/apr ... a-bromelia
Could you do us a favor and tell a bit about what you know and
what is in those articles ? I don't understand any portuguese
Might be interesting for all of us.

Thank you in advance

Timm

Timm, Mein lieber Freund:
You just touched the most controversial of all points on dyckias and how Dyckias have being used in favor of one point of view.
Apremavi is a Green Associantion a sort of non governamental organization from Rio do Sul up on the origins of The Rio Itajaí Basin. Rio do Sul, by coincidence is the city where I was born in 1954 and I lived there for 21 years. This little and enchanted town lies in between the mountains of the upper Itajaí bacin. There everybody knows everybody.
Some Dyckias are reofitic, live on river banks and endour some very harsh micro climate. These plants literaly stay submerged for weeks during the rainny season... and they are Dyckias! We have here Dyckia brevifolia, Dyckia distachia ( some sub-species and the true form) and Dyckia ibiramensis.
This plants are used in order to criate many impediments and obstacles to the constructions of dams for the obtaining eletrical energy.
The true:
-No one in that organization showers in cold water in winter, have no car, no TV set or no eletric bill and no PC.
They also continue to reproduce themselves and their children want and need more and more eletric energy.
- The plants are in no peril, no danger, nothing besides everything that is proper to its own wilderness.
- Dam builders have employed fine biologists and fitologists and never in the history of this country was made such detailed work in identifying species and discovering new ones. Dyckia Perau da Cabrita is just one. Intire populations of plants have being moved, studied and cared and preserved as excicatas or alive in some conservatory gardens.
- Dyckia distachia is in cultivation in such amount and quantity that all the rivers in Santa Catarina could be populated in overload. There are studies in order to turn it into cut flower for the flower market.
- The plant is found in some other sites and places even in Argentina on the river banks of rivers that run to Mar del Plata and begin in Santa Catarina west region.
- The plant has being used to obtain fame and notoriety.
The true, the very true is much more human and fair and commom:
The plant is pretty, smalll, rare but not that rare and doesn´t live in a single spot in the river stony margins.
The plant is well cared in the gardens of the dams in such a number that gardners there are overloaded and do not want a single more.
People who doesn´t want dams is not willing to spend less energy, on the contrary, they continue to reproduce and bath themselves in warm water....specially during the coldness of the Rio do Sul winter nights.
Is the oppositor to water energy making in favor of atomic energy?Eolic and others non poluent energies mode will never be at plenty for their children and for the children of these children of their children and so on...
Imagine atomic plants all over South America.......imagine. In USA they can not take the care that is needed, imagine us here. Did everybody forget Chernobyl? Was that not enough? What will we do with the atomic left overs?
Yes this would be the death of every plant on Earth, we and everything would be in critical serious danger.
I do believe that many people have being used without giving them a chance to know a bit about the true facts.
Deep within this issue lays political affairs and interests not a hint of doubt.
This one Dyckia is rare for sure ´cause it is the only known red form of Dyckia distachia. Reproduces easily in cultivation, almost spineless:

This is the one Dyckia distachia Hassler

Dyckia ibiramensis the rarest reofitic species in nature in All Santa Catarina, reproduces easily in culture:

...but the plant is endangered...endangered by the night of not knowing. Endangered by interests that have nothing of real and are not faithfull. The plant is in serious danger while we do not respect the human being. For as much rare an egg could be, people starving will eat it, swallowing recentlessly... We will never respect plants and animals if we do not respect ourselves. This terrific darkness, this endless night must clear, must dawn with the Light of the knowledge and the Light of the respect for each other.
As Goethe said when dying: LIGHT!

SCIENCE MAY BE LIGHT AND OUGHT TO BE LIGHT, BUT THIS LIGHT MUST BE ON THE TABLE AND NOT UNDER IT!!!! UNDER THE TALBLE THIS LIGHT IS USELESS, UNNEEDED, DESNECESSARY, NOT VALID. LET US BE LIGHT NO MATTER WHERE WE ARE NOR WHO WE ARE! LET US PUT IT WELL UPON THE TABLE, ALL OVER THE WORLD....TO IUMINATE BRAINS AND TO SHORT THE LONG NIGHT. LET US DAWN...LET THE SUN THE LIGHT GET IN...
