Greigia in bloom (lots of pics)

Beitrag von Timm Stolten »

Howdie Folks,

for the very first time we just had a specimen of the genus GREIGIA
coming into bloom. Over here in europe that genus does not seem to be
around in the collections, i have neither seen any in bloom alive, in
literature or even in the internet, eventough there are more than 30 species decribed.
What I'd like to know is if there is somebody around who has some
experience in cultivating them or can tell me if the name on the label
could be right.

I got it as a seedling about 8 years ago, don't know yet, if it has any
collecting data, have to check that next week. It was named:

GREIGIA sphacelata (Ruiz & Pavon) Regel, 1865

Can anybody help me confirming that name ?
Even if not, just enjoy ;-)

This looks close to the correct name. Have you access to Will & Zizka in Harvard Papers in Botany 4(1) : 225-240. 1999? We have grown a plant with this name for 30 years in Adelaide, Australia but it has never flowered so we can decide if the label is correct! Do we have the rare nonflowering form or is it your culture!?

Hi Derek !!!!!
Nice to have you here !!!
So far I do NOT have a copy of that paper yet, I should be asking Rhina,
she is working in Zizkas group in Frankfurt, so she is close to the source ;-)

I have to check our database to find out exactly where this speciman is from.
It came from Frankfurt as a seedling about 8 years ago, thats pretty sure.
Don't know from here wether it was grown from wild collected, documented
seed or not.

I have also forwarded this issue to Dr.Till in Vienna, let's see what he thinks
about this. But its nice to have another name-problem nearly solved.

I will keep you posted on that.
