Racinaea undulifolia

Beitrag von Bill »

Hi All,

This past weekend I was able to purchase a trio of exquisite little Racinaea undulifolias at the San Francisco Orchid Show. I've gathered enough info online to know that they are highland dwellers, from the eastern slopes of the Andes in Ecuador... our Bay Area climate should more or less agree with them. But if anyone has any advice about how to best grow these cute little seaweed-heads, please let me know. I would hate to lose them!

Thanks!

Bill

Hi Bill,

Welcome to our forum. :salut
Yes you picked some really lovely ones there, Racinaea undulifolia are
real beauties, but I wasn't lucky with them.
You in the bay area should be much better of with them then I .
They appear to like it very moist and cool, because their natural habitat
is in very high altitudes.
I tried to keep them in little terrarium with a lot of moss and sprayed them
daily. Keep an eye on the stem, they love to rot very fast.

As I said, I am not the one to ask for hints, unfortunately,
my plant did not survive 12 months.

Good luck

Timm

PS: I am just curious  : How much did they charge you for one plant?

Hello Timm,

And thank you for the welcome! Those little Racinaeas cost me US$18 each- but, there are 2-3 plants in each clump, I felt it was a good deal!

You might be interested in knowing that they came from an Ecuadorian orchid nursery called Ecuagenera. They are located in Cuenca, and although they do not advertise it on their website, they do propagate a selection of Tillandsias. they attend several orchid shows yearly in the US and Europe, and if you contact them ahead of time, they will bring whatever you like to the event nearest you.

Besides the R. undulifolias, I was able to also purchase
Tillandsia portillae, T. ionochroma, and T. complanata from them. I also bought a plant they said is T. hemkeri, but in fact it is more like the grey-leaved specimen Don Manfredo showed pictures of in a post here from last year. Perhaps it's still an unnamed species?

Beste,
Bill

Hi Bill,

just found the website of that nursery Ecuagenera
(..and added it to our link database right away ;-))
They sell crazy stuff like Guzmania puyoensis, unbelievable.
And while surfin on that site, I finally found out who
Father Angel Andreetta was, a name I only knew from Prof. Rauh
diaries and publications. He is the founder of that nursery.
Rauh even named some plant after him like Guzmania andreettae,
which they do sell too.
I wish I could shop there a little bit

Greetings Timm

Timm, :D

Be sure to send Ecuagenera an e-mail and ask them to send you a list of all their bromeliads... there is quite a bit more than what is actually pictured on the website.

I have heard from an anthurium-collector friend who has visited that they have an incredible amount of plants that are still waiting to be identified and catalogued. It would be quite a place to spend a few hours (days?) indeed!

Hopefully if more people request Tillandsias and other Bromeliads- Puyas come to mind!- Ecuagenera will make an effort to offer more variety!
