Chanin, this one is for you !

It is quite a long time ago that our last remaining specimen of
Dyckia hebdingii flowered and set seeds.
To be precise it was in 1997
(if it has flowered in between, I simply forgot and ignore it for the sake of this story ;-)

At that time I started an experiment, encouraged by an old article written
by Mrs. Hromadnik. Having too much seed and no space to store them,
I tried to put them in the freezer for better days to come along with many others.

Well, even gardeners do get older and a bit forgetful.
About 4 weeks ago a colleague, responsible for the seed-bank reminded
me of that little cardboard box to do something with it,
otherwise she would toss it away.............. Ups.

Okay so I put them old seeds into soil and now look what happend
after 11 years below zero:

Freezy greetings to Thailand ;-)

WOWWW...That sound magically

It remind me of Japanese's dicovering a 1000 years lotus seed and they can grow up!

BTW, Dyckia hebdingii is native to a very hight mountain of Grand de Sul, South Brazil.
So I think this species has the iceage experience :D

No, no and no and once more no and again!
Dyckia ebdingii does not come from a high mountain, as it was lon long ago believed! It comes from Rio Grande do Sul, the Southermost part of Brazil. It comes from Arroio dos Ratos and Minas do Faxinal and such places have no mountain at all. There are some hills but never higher than 200meters high. It is a region not far from the sea. Tthe moutains in Rio Grande do Sul are in the North close to my Santa Catarina State where the temperatures can go down below freezing point but never, never, never for a extented period of time. Meanwhile in Rio Grande do Sul even when it is not high in a norther mountaisn the weather can be freezing but never lasts more than some hours. It snowed in Porto Alegre something like 15 years ago and just for two hours. In Minas do Faxinal it really may snow but is very, very, very scarse and rare.
Look, I´ve been there several times and I collected Dyckia ebdingii and in my opinion they are one of the most beutiful plants of all. That area has some other species of Dyckias as Dyckia domfelicianensis e some other.
If they get a good quality sunlinght they get blueish/silvery.

You all can see some Dyckia ebdiongii in nature in the forum here under the title Dyckias ebdngii in nature or haring the nature with cacti. Ther is also in off topicaa forum something about the cold in here, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. Santa Caarina in spite of bein in a nothern most situation in rlation to Rio Grande do Sul we have a much mor cold weather time in winter and in some areas we do have snow. But Dyckias can not stand more than a few hours way down below zero centigrade. Dyckia reitzi can stand temperature of 18 centigrades below zero 9 our Brazilian registrated record of cold) but this is extremely rare eve high in the Morro da Igreja (Churc Hill) in Urubici in Santa Catarina.
