Some Dwarf Hybrids of Pineapple in Thailand

Beitrag von chanin »

Since 1986, my good friend, M.L. Jaruphan Thongtham, Associate Professor of Horticultural Faculty at Kasetsart University, Bangkok, Thailand, has established a reserch on interspecific crossing Ananas spp. to create some dwarf hybrids for ornamental pot-plant purpose.

After a decade of the process, we could select about a dozen of nice hybrids which have some potentials for the purpose. Most of the selected hybrids are without leaves -spine. We used Ananas comosus cv. ‘Phuket’ or ‘Tainung’ as seed-parent plant crossed with Ananas lucidus as pollen-parent plant.

I only can say: WOW

THX for those nice pics chanin. Unfortunately there aren't many people
around here in germany who are into cultivation of pineapples............
So for us such pictures are just mouthwatering :!:
Did you introduce these hybrids allready to the market for sale or are
they still in captivity in the university ?

Cheers Timm

Oh Mr.Chanin I remember you from the Bromeliad book.

I have some question. I wonder if Ananas 'sunset' is the same as Ananas lucidus 'red' ? Is it the syn. name or the name for traditonal.

Regards,
Seth.

Hi Timm,...and Sawasdee Seth,

I've heard that most of these hybrids are still kept as the properties of the project at Rayong province, East Thailand. Yes..only the 'Sunset' had been released to the market, I think it would be the same we called Ananas lucidus 'Red' because they are identical.
