Tillandsia ID
Hi to all,
A few years ago, a friend of mine who was in Brazil , near Morro de Chapeu (Bahia), brought me an offset of a rupicolous ?Tillandsia . In the habitat (camp rupestre of the Chapada Diamentina) this brom grows on sandstones.
The plant has flowered these days and I hope that someone can help me for the identification.
Thanking you in advance

Hi Gerárd,
that is Vriesea pseudoligantha.
I have a plant that looks exactly the same.
Check the images in the wiki
http://de.bromwiki.net/Vriesea_pseudoligantha
The stripes are barely visible, but they are there.
My plant came from the same location and was identified by Dr. Walter Till,
so I guess the name is solid.
Greetings, Timm

It indeed looks quite weird.
I received this plant a long time ago as a "maybe Catopsis".
Kinda slow grower but pups pretty well.
Found little infos on that species, it is supposed to grow saxicolously and rather dry.
I tried different types of cultivation, some are kept on a piece of lava-rock,
some mounted on wood,
some inside the whole year, some outside in the european summer.
Can't notice any significant differences.
The flowers open late in the afternoon and close early in the morning.
Definitely worth a try.
Greetings Timm

Hello Tim,
Thank you for this ID and excuses my silence ,I was absent during sometimes.
I confirm your observations about the flowering : the flowers open in the late afternoon and are closed in the morning. Also the opening between two flowers is long : one week.
I cultivate this species outdoor during summer and in a greenhouse with cacti during winter (with minimum temperature of 8° Celsius). The plant on the picture has collected in 2004 by a friend to me.
In habitat this Vriesea grows in full light on red sanstone in Campo rupestre with others broms as Encholirium sp., Hohenbergia sp. and some cacti as Melocactus cremnophilus, Micranthocereus purpureus, Pilosocereus luetzelburgii and many others plants. I have visited the area in August 2003 and during the days the place were very sunny but during the nights they were frogs and thin rains.so in the mornig all was very wet.
I'll put picture of the habitat in the forum if you are interested
Ps : please excuse my english.

Images of the habitat would be very interesting.
Would you allow us to use maybe some of them in our wiki ?
I am looking forward to it.
Regards, Timm
