Dyckias in Brazil are not in the next corner or are sold everywhere. No way! It is extremely hard to find any to buy. No one cultivates them to sell or for selling purposes. In fact it is forbbiden by the Brazilian Law. Once in a while and very once in a while one Dyckia may be found in a shop but people here is not fond of them and they are not hot coockies and hardly sell so even the florists are relutant to keep them. I never saw any dyckia on selling anywhere in Brazil being well identified. When you find one it may be classified as succulent or cactus. We search, we Dyckia lovers search in Nature, trade with scientists and researches and mainly we trade and change plants and seeds with friends all over the country and neighbour countries. I do travel a lot and Brazil is huge. We have some well known collectors and curious people among Dyckia lovers, of course some love more the money Dyckias can bring into their pockets than the Dyckias themselves but even so they may come in handy help one way or another. No , no and no and no several more no or noes more: unles you have friends that are Dyckia lovers your Dyckia collection will be a migger and miserable one. You also oughtta be an intrepid searcher to get new ones to trate with them and if you are atletic, the better ´cause there are mountanis to climb, rivers to cross...and many, many no no ahead.
Dyckias are not in nature as they would be in a shop. Sometimes a very rare one is in such a miserable state that you think twice before taking it home with you. Sometimes the perfect Dyckia is so high in a clif that it is easier to climb the Everest. If you are an alpinist the better but carrying the alpinism gear, hooks and ropes in the fields may be to much too desgasting and exaustive for you. No, no and no. In Europe, Japan, USA, and some parts of Asia one can buy Dyckias by mail, without stepping out the house.
There are catalogs in the Net, buy Dyckias alive by catalogs. Some american seller send them all over the world. It is all a matter of money! Here its forbiden to put Dyckias out the country! It is forbiden to get into the country from abroad. If you are caught with one you go to jail! It is even forbbiden to keep with you any of the native plants without a special legal permit.
Dyckias here and keep dyckias here is far more difficult than anywhere else on Earth. This country we say here " is not mother Joana´s house any longer" where everything was possible. No, no.
It is not the plants themselves that is difficult to find available next corner, the information about how to keep and care is even more scarse and rare. Yes, yes there is no, no and no books on Dyckias in Portuguese even those rare ones whose author is Brazilian it is published outside this country in languages we poor mortal guys will never have a chance even to hear it to get to know the sound of the words. ( ..and I manage to understand German, English, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese)
No, no and multiple noes! Here it is very difficult to keep Dyckias!
But things are improving some how. We are not anymore so easy to fool. The informatinon is far more easy with interNet and everybody who knows a bit English as myself can go farer than ever. The world, our house, is getting smaller and smaller and things will get better, easier and a bit more fare.
I wrote this ´cause people there keep on saying to meoh how easy is to have dyckias there, the climate...and so on...
No, no once more even here without knowledge and some skills you do not go anywhere with Dyckias.
See this picture. This may be the most new desired Dyckia plant among brazilian Dyckia keepers. Big teeth and red, red as blood and ever ever red as pigeon blood! A friend was the one to get to it in wilderness. This friend really loves me and we are as close as any good friends could be. I live in the Ssouthern part and this friend of mine lives up up North. Look at he plant (and this was long after it came to me) The plant has improved a lot!
