Orthophytum burle-marxii var. seabrae ?
Hi folks,
for over 10 years I ve been cultivating a plant which is labeled as
ORTHOPHYTUM burle-marxii L.B.Smith & R.W.Read, 1979,
var. seabrae Rauh, 1985.
For the second time since then it finally started to bloom this spring.
Comparing this to the only picture I found so far of the var. burle-marxii
on the FCBS Site, I do not see any major differnce.
Is there anybody out there to tell me if the name could be true?

In my opinion, I think the Zurich plant should be var. albopictum
as it appears to be identical with specific taxa "albopictum" :
from the Greek albo (white) and picta (painted); white-painted
I have one labelled var. seabrae that came from Michael Bromeliad in US.
Here this is mine, so you see, we could not distinguish both while unbloom.

I would like to meet new friends in other part of the world and would be glad to trade plants or seed from this part of the world.

Hi Chanin, I was also thinking O. albopictum. On the other hand, if you look at pictures available on the web, you wont see plants with the white center separated from the outer red by a zone of green. I think this might distinguish the Swiss plant from a "typical" O. albopictum. But it might as well be due to the fact that the flowering of the plant is just beginning, and thus the center of the plant hasn't been exposed to intense sun light for enough time to develop the intense red coloration. The plant on the above picture was collected by a gentleman named "Horst" without collection number. A meter away are more plants that are similar but with a different collection number, namely "Supthut 8935". Although well past flowering, these do resemble a "typical" O. albopictum more closely, in my opinion.
What do you think?
I just hope that in spite of the obviously wrong name the collection number is still correct and that the wrong name is not due to misplaced tags...
Cheers,
Joachim

Timm, Could you please find the original describtion of both Ortho. burle-marxii and its var. seabrae, also O.albo-pictum
I would like to know the specific characteristic which apart them off.

It's good to sometime look what others have to say in other forums...
This one is sopposed to be the "true" Or. burle-marxii:
whereas this one is supposed to be the var seabrae:
(see http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load ... 68.html?19)
The difference is significant, yet the plant pictured as var. seabrae varies significantly from plants grown under that name in Zürich.
Anyway, all are really amazing plants!
Cheers,
Joachim
